In recent years, The Sims 4 has added quite a bit of gameplay for child Sims, and it’s truly made Sims’ childhoods feel meaningful and like they impact their lives in the future. The Adventure Awaits expansion pack introduced imaginary friends to The Sims 4, and it will only accentuate this. Each Sim can have its own friend, and they will help shape them and accompany them through the journey that is childhood.
However, first players will need to know how they can get their Sims an imaginary friend in The Sims 4, and from then on, they can decide if they want to turn them into real Sims or keep them exclusive to this early stage of life. This guide will show players how their Sims can grow up with an imaginary friend beside them.
How to Get an Imaginary Friend in The Sims 4
To get an imaginary friend in The Sims 4, players have to enter Build Mode and purchase one of the four available ImagineMe! dolls in the Kids > Toys section. Alternatively, they can type Imaginary Friend in the search bar and the options will also appear. Players must place the toy in the Sims’ home, but this won’t be enough to make an imaginary friend. The Sims has to meet one of these requirements in order to turn the doll into an imaginary friend:
- Befriend the doll
- Achieve Level 3 in the Creative Skill
- Have an extreme low Social Need
If the Sim meets one of these requirements, they can turn the doll into an imaginary friend by taking them out of their inventory and selecting the Turn Into Imaginary Friend option.

Sims can play and hang out with their imaginary friends, but if they’re controlling another Sim it will appear as if the child is playing with or talking to themselves.
Eventually, the friend will return to Imaginary Land, but Sims can bring them back at any time by placing them in the world and selecting the Summon Imaginary Friend interaction.
How to Keep an Imaginary Friend Forever
Imaginary friends are a great way to boost a lonely child Sim’s Social Need, but as they grow older, Sims tend to focus on other things in life and tend to forget about these friends. However, that doesn’t have to be the case; players can actually get their Sims’ imaginary friends to stay in the picture forever by turning them into real Sims.
When a child Sim turns into a teenager, they will be able to interact with their imaginary friend doll and choose the Offer to Make Real option, which will turn them into a real Sim and add them to their household (or Manage Households if the current household is full). When Sims turn an imaginary friend into a real Sim, they will receive the Non-Fictitous Friend sentiment towards their former doll.
How to Get Rid of Imaginary Friends in The Sims 4
What Happens When You Say Goodbye Forever to An Imaginary Friend in The Sims 4
Players can get rid of their imaginary friends for good as well. This can be done as a child or as an older Sim. To get rid of an imaginary friend in The Sims 4, players must interact with them and select the Say Goodbye Forever interaction. If they’re in their doll-form, they will have to select this option once again to confirm it. Then, the two will hug and share an endearing moment.
When Sims say goodbye forever to an imaginary friend, they will remain in their Relationship panel. While the friend does not make the Sim feel guilty at the moment of goodbye, it is still an inevitability. The Sim will receive the Fictitous Friend No More guilty sentiment towards their doll. However, if they keep the doll around, they can use the Seek Comfort from an Old Friend interaction whenever they experience negative moodlets.
